I heard of DISH a while back when one of my friends mentioned it offhand when we talked about sports.

He told me that it was a good network for sports channels.

I wanted to check it out, so I got it installed at home.

It worked well for a few weeks until the remote stopped working on a Friday night after I sat down to watch some TV.

It was just the volume keys that were not working. I could do everything else but could not change the volume.

I called up DISH and told them about the issue.

They walked me through the stuff I could try to fix my remote.

After the call, I also hopped on the internet to find out what this issue was; maybe I could find a bit more online.

So this guide is a result of combining everything I found online, and the stuff DISH customer service asked me to try out.

To fix a DISH remote's volume buttons that have stopped working, restart the receiver. Then, reprogram the remote to the TV again and check if it is set to control the TV's volume.

Reasons for DISH Network Remote Volume Not Working

Finding the exact reason why your DISH remote volume is not working is the important first step before you get around to fixing it.

First, we need to look at the most probable causes of why the remote cannot change the volume.

One of the more obvious reasons why the remote has malfunctioned are low batteries.

To check the battery levels in your DISH remote, press the Home button three times.

The menu will display the battery levels of the remote on the right side of the screen.

Another reason is that the remote or the receiver is broken.

If the volume control signal can't be received or sent properly, you will obviously not be able to control the TV volume.

Although it's pretty rare, something else that can cause this is that your remote hasn't correctly paired with the receiver.

The chances of this happening is pretty small, but you can completely dismiss it.

Check the Batteries

Dying batteries can cause your remote not to register button presses properly.

If you don't remember changing out your batteries in a long while, replace them with new batteries.

Four AA batteries ought to cut it and get nice ones like the Duracells.

Reboot the Receiver and TV

Restarting the receiver and TV will revert any settings changes that had resulted in you losing volume control.

First, turn off your TV, then follow these steps to restart your receiver:

  1. Unplug the power cord of the DISH receiver. It is the wire with the red tag.
  2. Wait for 10 seconds, then plug it back in.

If you have a Hopper & Joey system:

  1. Unplug the power cord of the Hopper, which is the larger receiver.
  2. Wait for 5 minutes and plug it back in.

Try adjusting the volume of the remote now. If it isn't fixed, continue to the next fix.

Check Remote Control Settings

Sometimes a settings change in the remote can cause issues with controlling your TV volume, so checking if all the settings are in their default state will help.

To access the remote control settings of your DISH receiver:

  1. Press the Home button on your DISH remote twice. If the remote does not have a Home button, press the Menu button once.
  2. Choose Settings from the menu.
  3. Select Remote Control from the menu.
  4. Take a look at the settings and ensure that your remote is properly paired to the receiver.

Set Remote for Volume Control

DISH remotes come with the ability to control your TV volume and your receiver volume separately, and you not being able to change the volume can be traced back to this feature.

To check if the TV volume is being controlled,

  1. Press the Home button on your DISH remote twice. If the remote does not have a Home button, press the Menu button once.
  2. Choose Settings from the menu.
  3. Go to Remote Control > Customizations.
  4. Find Volume & Mute buttons and make sure its set to Control the TV's volume. If not, set it to control the TV's Volume.

Try controlling the volume of your TV again.

Unpair and Re-pair the Remote

Unpair and pair the remote to the receiver again.

Doing this will reset any settings stored on the remote and receiver and fix the issue if a setting change caused the unresponsive buttons.

To unpair your remote:

  1. On the front panel of your receiver, press the SYSTEM INFO button.
  2. Using the arrow keys on the receiver's front, navigate to the Unpair button and hit OK.

To pair your remote back again:

  1. On the front panel of the receiver, press the SYSTEM INFO button again.
  2. On the side or front of your remote, press the SAT button.
  3. Press the CANCEL or Back button on the front of your remote.

You have successfully unpaired and paired the remote to the receiver.

Try changing the volume now to see if you fixed it.

Reprogram the DISH Network Remote Control

Reprogramming the remote is different from pairing because you program the remote to your specific TV to control the TV with the receiver remote. Pairing is done to control the receiver only.

The reprogramming procedure differs a little bit depending on the make of your TV.

But the entire process is easy to follow.

To reprogram your remote to the TV:

  1. Press the Home button on your DISH remote twice. If the remote does not have a Home button, press the Menu button once.
  2. Choose Settings > Remote Control.
  3. Use the menu to select the device that you are going to pair.
  4. Select the Pairing Wizard. It guides you through the entire process.
  5. Find the brand of the TV you are pairing the device to. Choosing the right brand is important because the pairing code for each brand is slightly different.
  6. The pairing wizard will now test different device codes. Follow the prompts on the screen to test each code.
  7. If the code works, select Finish. If it doesn't, select Next Code.

After doing this step, check if the remote is set to control the TV volume. To do that, follow the steps from the previous sections.

Contact Support

If trying all of these troubleshooting steps didn't let your control the volume again, you would need to contact DISH support.

After talking to them about your issue, they may send technicians or ask you to try something we haven't here and get your remote fixed.

Replace the Remote

Replacing the remote is the only way out if nothing works, but have you ever thought of upgrading from the regular old remote that Dish gives you?

Universal remotes can be a good replacement for the stock remote since they offer much more than controlling the TV and the receiver.

They let you control almost every device in your entertainment setup.

You no longer have to mess with multiple remotes trying to find the right one.

I'd suggest buying the Sofabaton U1 .

Its compatibility list is almost 6000 devices long and comes with a smartphone app as well.

Final Thoughts

The best course of action you could take if you face any issue with the remote would be to replace it outright, but trying other methods won't hurt.

I would still suggest upgrading to a universal remote.

I currently use a universal remote for my Sony TV, and the experience has been nothing but brilliant,

I could control my DISH box, as well as my Xfinity box and my AV receiver and I don't need to fiddle with fifty different remotes anymore.
